14 to West Ham (Liverpool Echo) Stories of poor away turnouts.
https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/14-west-ham-explanation-behind-15674727

Amusing little story about when Liverpool took 14 to West Ham in the 74/75 season. Anybody remember the game?

Any tales when we took bugger all to away games for any reason?

And any stories of completely disastrous away days one way or another?

I remember when we took 11 (yes, eleven!) official away coaches to Grimsby in November 1992, when we drew 1-1 (Morley scored!)

Despite selling out most away games these days, the average amount of ‘official’ away coaches are about 2 per match (Hornchurch take two or three, I believe.)

Hornchurch had about 11 coaches for Man U in the cup when Payet scored THAT free kick.

Cardiff one cold Tuesday in November about fifteen years ago. There were about 200 of us

I remember going to see us at Bramall Lane in '67 I think. There couldn't have been more than about 150 to 200. I was 13.
But one thing they'll never forget is seeing Sir Geoff Hurst getting sent off for the only time in his career after he chinned some northern clogger of a centre half.

Sunderland away in April 1985. Bloody cold, around 200 of us there. And we won 1-0.

Newcastle away in November 1986, on a Sunday for live TV, no trains during the day, got an overnight coach from Victoria up there, and coach back. Lost 4-0. About 150 of us there.

Other than Cosenza, where there were around 80 of us, not aware of anything less than those since I started going away in 1983.

Apart from friendlies and testimonials, I can’t think of many competitive away matches that I have been to were there have only been a few Hammers present. If we are speaking about less than a thousand I would say the following:

Cremonese (Anglo Italian), 1600 gate, but we still outnumbered the home fans.

Luton (Full Member’s Cup), December, 1990, about 500,

But, probably Millwall away, Division 2, May 1979, when we lost 2-1. The away section at that match was quite sparsely populated.

Smallest amount for me was 23rd Aug 78 Newcastle away Wednesday night 300 approx on the train 0-3 Devo Cross and Pop.

I remember the Liverpool 0-0 home match as it was a great result for us at the time and we should have won, bearing in mind this was an era when they mostly beat us. However, I don’t recall anything about their support that night, was this before segregation (when they would have been mixed in with us in the South Bank) I can’t remember that detail?

SDKFZ222, I think I would have been at this match, but don't remember much of it. I am 100% sure this game was before segregation. Few came down in them days wisely. Forest came and ended on the pitch, Newcastle I think it was suffered similar. I went most games home and quite a few away 73-87 approx. Later that year in October 75 was the Man Utd game at UP with no segregation in the south bank when Man Utd fans got onto the pitch to get away from the West Ham fans attacking them stopping the game a couple of times. There is a link on you tube.

I remember the Millwall game at UP 78 the one after the Harry Cripps testimonial (missed that), there was no segregation just a helicopter overhead and a line of bobbies (one smashed his truncheon on the forehead of the bloke next to me, loads of claret) which gave way under the strain. Miillwall were chased out. The return at the old den 79 night game was also lively from early afternoon.

Can't remember when the fences went up in the south bank early 80s? Got a season ticket again now sit with the popcorn munchers, not sure for how long.

Watching the Big Match reruns from the 82-83 season the south bank was segregated with fences then. 86/87 was my first season so all i remember is segregation

Weren't the fences on the south bank put up about 79/80.
They used to keep the away lot in the bit over near the west side and the ob used to line up by the gaps. Thought that was the only fence for a while.
The league cup game v front wheels 1980 (what a night that was) when West Ham done the touts and got in the SB for a tear up, only remember one fence even though they gave the 4b2s the whole end.

Don't remember any poor away day turn outs really, always seemed to be a mob there, dotted about sometimes, as usual.
And there was a good mob at the 79 Millwall game (one of the best mobs I've seen!).We met at the Wentworth.
And the boozer's still west ham and going strong to this day. Was in there last Saturday night after the gooners game.
Fuckin ell, 40 years ago.

And Bullet, i still get over there amongst the popcorn and hot chocolate stalls as well.
Bring back the peanut man through the crowd. He'll rake it in.
Cream crackered but loaded!

Wanstead, must be about right the SB fence going up around 79-80, Millwall game 78 was probably what broke the camels back imho. I miss the atmosphere back then, being able to walk around all sides and stand where you pleased. Started going again after they made the BG all seater in the 90's but hated it because it killed the atmosphere for me personally that has carried on at the LS. If it wasn't for meeting up and having a beer I not sure I could hack it much.
